This 114 acre site includes 43 acres of treatment and support facilities as well as additional area for stormwater treatment, open space, wildlife habitat and wetlands. One of the central issues on this project was that the facility had no ability to impact any meaningful waste water reduction strategies as these were all managed by a separate arm of the utility which handled incentives and other conservation-based regulations. Because reduction strategies were unavailable, a system strategy was utilized that could respond to fluctuating waste water levels that were expected to drastically reduce over time.
The team developed a concept for a system that combined two smaller systems operating simultaneously to sanitize water to defined EPA levels, one of which would be decommissioned as incentives and regulations realized their intended impact. Using this creative approach, the project is expected to achieved long term system cost targets by eliminating the need for both a single larger and more expensive system, and reduced total cost of ownership through flexible operation of the second system.
